The ceiling is painted and now the Christmas tree is up and decorated with all sorts of fancy baubles - in silver and read only of course.
When I was at school, many years ago now, I used to love December. The first week of advent we lit a candle and one boy and one girl were allowed to choose a carol each from the oxford book of carols. My favorite was the Boars head - don't know why but I just liked it. the second week two boys and two girls were allowed to pick a carol each - we only usually got to week three before the end of term but we really got to know a lot of carols and I love them - I know some church representatives don't approve of singing carols but Kids love them and they might enjoy coming to church more at Christmas if they recognised some of the tunes...

What happened to singing?
When I was a child at both Junior and Grammar schools we had two music lessons a week which were mainly singing - the recorder band and the orchestra had separate rehearsals - plus hymn practice every Friday, assembly every morning (2 or 3 hymns at junior school, 1 or 2 at grammar) and, of course, weekly choir practice. It's no wonder I can go to church service after church service without ever having to look down at my hymn book.
